Frequently Asked Questions
Furniture
Can I visit the McKinnon and Harris workshop?
We would be happy to give you a tour of our Richmond, Virginia workshop and headquarters! Please email [email protected] to schedule an appointment.
What is your handcrafted furniture made of?
Our furniture is made of high performance aluminum.
What does high performance furniture mean?
We craft furniture to endure, outperform and outlast all other outdoor furniture. Performance and innovation are driving forces in the workshop and we are constantly seeking a better way to build things. To learn more about what sets us apart, explore our Craftsmanship, Finishes, and Textiles pages.
How will the furniture perform on the coast?
Our multi-step finishing process combines EC² technology and architectural grade powder coating to ensure your furniture will be impenetrable in extreme environments. McKinnon and Harris furniture can be left outside year-round in salt-air (corrosive) environments. We do recommend the use of our Protective Covers during off seasons to keep any debris or droppings off of the frame.
Can the high performance furniture be left outside in the winter?
Our furniture is designed to be left outside. We recommend the use of protective covers instead of moving the furniture to a storage area during the colder months. Our furniture should never be stacked or stored upside down as this could damage the finish.
Purchasing

I am interested in buying a piece of your furniture. What do I do next?
Please ask your designer to contact us and we would be glad to send them a quote. If you do not have a designer, please contact us and we can guide you through our process.
How long does it take for me to receive the furniture once I have placed an order?
A curated selection of products are available in Under 8 Weeks. Our current lead time on all other products is 12-16 weeks. Contact your sales representative to confirm our current lead time.
How does the outdoor furniture ship to my home?
We offer several different delivery options. If you are working with a designer, we would be glad to ship your furniture to their receiving warehouse. If you would like it shipped directly to your home, we can assist in coordinating a white glove delivery on your behalf.
Do you accept credit cards?
We only accept payment by check, wire or electronic transfer for furniture. Our Italian Performance Fabrics and Deck Blankets are available to purchase online with a credit card.
Do you accept returns?
All McKinnon and Harris sales are final. We do not accept returns as the furniture is handmade specifically for you.
Care and Maintenance
How should I care for my McKinnon and Harris furniture?
We suggest you treat the finish the same way you would treat your car. When cleaning the furniture frame, we suggest using a car wash designed for fine automotive finishes. All McKinnon and Harris furniture ships with a Care & Maintenance Kit to ensure you have the proper tools to care for your furniture. Please visit our Care and Maintenance page to learn more.

Do you offer a refinishing service?
Yes, we offer a Spa Service. We invite your handcrafted furniture to come back to our workshop and receive a complete technological and aesthetic overhaul. The frame is inspected and upgraded to current engineering specs and all hardware is replaced. The furniture is completely stripped down to an unfinished state and receives a new architectural grade powder coated finish. Please contact us if you are interested in our Spa Service.
The surface protectors on my furniture legs seem to have worn down. What do I do?
We would be happy to replace your glides at no charge. Please contact us with the style and finish color of your furniture so we can send you the appropriate glides.
I want to wash my cushion jacket, but the zipper is not working. What do I do?
Our zippers are intentionally sewn shut for a purpose. The permanently covered cushions are designed to be cleaned with the fabric cover remaining over the foam interior. Please do not remove the fabric cover from the foam interior. Visit our Care and Maintenance page to learn how to properly clean your cushions.
Italian Performance Fabrics
What materials is the fabric made from?
All McKinnon and Harris Italian Performance Fabrics are woven with 100% Acrylic and are easily cleaned and maintained.
Where are your fabrics made?
Our Italian Performance Fabrics are sourced from a small, third generation family owned mill in Northern Italy. Known for its weaving traditions, the Northern Italian region is home to Europe’s purest low mineral waters which give our fabrics more softness without leaving any residuals. In the foothills of the Alps, our fabrics are made by artisans who share our passion for craftsmanship, sustainability, timeless design, and performance.
Are your materials produced with sustainability in mind?
Absolutely. We are fully committed to environmental preservation and protection, which for us extends to the materials we use and the partners we choose to work with. Our partner mill incorporates solar energy, cogeneration practices and water recycling into their production. And, our fabrics are treated with Teflon™, which allows for easier removal of stains and spills and quick drying, leading to less washing cycles, less water and less energy use.
How can I place an order?
You must be a registered trade user to order our Italian Performance fabrics by the yard. Once logged in, you may place an order online by choosing a style and colorway and adding it to your cart and completing the payment process via credit card.
You are also welcome to contact your sales representative, or have your designer do so, to place an order.
Will your fabric ship internationally?
We do not currently offer online ordering with a delivery address outside of the 48 contiguous states. To place an order with a delivery address outside of the US, please contact us.
Do you accept international credit cards?
We are currently only accepting credit cards with a billing address in the US. If you are interested in purchasing fabric, please contact us and we can work with you on placing your order and remitting payment via bank transfer.

Follow the link for detailed care instructions.
Do you provide a cutting for approval (CFA)?
Slight color variations may appear due to the intrinsic properties of the fiber spinning process. The blending of multiple colors is an artisanal process that creates subtle irregularities in order to closely resemble the natural appearance of linen and wool fabrics. Clients may investigate the condition of our current inventory by requesting a cutting for approval (CFA).
Does McKinnon and Harris offer a warranty for fabrics?
McKinnon and Harris Italian Performance Fabrics are covered by a 6-year limited warranty. For details, please check here.
Is there a minimum order size?
The minimum order for our textiles is five (5) yards per SKU. Textiles are sold in full yard increments.
Where can I find trade pricing for the fabrics?
All textile prices are listed on our website as Retail. Trade members will see net pricing when fabrics are added to their shopping cart and they are logged into the site as a registered trade user.
How long does it take to receive fabric, once I have placed an order?
Lead times can vary and fluctuate, but most of our textiles ship to the destination of your choosing from our mill in Italy and have a lead time of 1-2 weeks.
Is a deposit required for fabric orders?
Fabric sales require 100% payment at time of order.
Do you offer the option to reserve fabric?
Fabrics can be reserved for five (5) business days and then automatically expire. Please contact [email protected] to place a reserve.
Custom Design
How much will this increase the price?
We quote each custom request individually.
How much will this increase the lead time?
Lead time is dependent on the uniqueness of the design and the materials selected. If lead time is critical, the engineering team can assist with identifying alternate materials, dimensions, or construction to shorten lead time. You should factor in approximately 2-4 weeks to review and approve the design, depending on the complexity of the customization.
What is the cost of a custom finish color?
The cost is 7% of the order value (minimum charge applies).
